Waverley Private Hospital would like to introduce Dr Janitha Jayawardana (Dr JJ) who is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS) specialising in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr JJ has recently returned from Fellowship (2021-2022) where he underwent further sub-specialty training in Complex Otology, Auditory Implants and Skull Base Surgery with Assoc Professor Phillip Bird and the Southern Cochlear Implant Programme (SCIP) in New Zealand. Dr JJ currently has a public appointment with the Otology service at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital where he is involved in complex middle ear surgery and regularly attends the Victorian Cochlear Implant Programme multidisciplinary meeting.
In addition to this Dr JJ has extensive experience in Paediatric ENT, Rhinology/ Sinus surgery and General ENT including Sleep Apnea surgery. From 2019 until 2021, he spent time between regional Queensland and Victoria working at various busy, high volume practices. Of particular note is Dr JJ’s work with local organisations to delivery high quality ENT care to the indigenous population in the Isaac and Whitsunday regions.
Dr JJ is originally from Perth but he moved to Melbourne in 2013 to specialise in ENT surgery as part of Victoria’s ENT training programme over six years from 2013 to 2018 where he worked at various major metropolitan centres including the Royal Children’s Hospital, Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital, Austin Hospital, Monash, Alfred Hospital and Barwon Health (Geelong). In 2018 he passed his final examinations and was later admitted into the Royal Australian College of Surgeons as a fellow.
Dr JJ was born in 1985 and immigrated from Sri Lanka with his parents in the late 1980s to call Australia home. He grew up with his family in the outback of Western Australia, and moved to Perth to complete his tertiary education. In 2008, Dr JJ obtained his primary medical qualification with honors at the University of Western Australia. From 2009 until 2012, Dr JJ worked in major metropolitan hospitals in Perth gaining valuable experience in the various specialties of medicine, surgery and critical care, and was awarded the prestigious ‘Goatcher Intern of the Year’ award at Royal Perth Hospital. Currently Dr JJ has a young family which keeps him busy and he is an avid photographer, music / movie critic and sneaker collector.
Dr JJ is happy to welcome all varieties of ENT referrals for an expert opinion on diagnosis and management. He is happy to provide expert care in keeping with current evidence, as well as being pragmatic in providing a solution to the individual needs of every patient.
