What is pain?

“Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage.”

International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP)

Unlike commonly thought, pain is more than just a physical sensation. It can be influenced by beliefs, attitudes, mood, culture, personality and social factors. It can also have an immense effect on your emotional and mental wellbeing.

Pain is experienced very differently from one individual to another and can vastly impact your quality of life.

You do not need to live with constant pain.

Two key types of pain are acute pain and chronic pain.

Acute pain

According to Pain Australia, acute pain lasts for a short time following surgery, trauma or other condition. It acts as a warning to the body to seek help. Although it usually improves as the body heals, in some cases, it may not. If your pain lasts beyond the time expected to heal, it can be considered chronic pain.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is pain that persists for more than 3 months or lingers after you expect an injury or surgery to have healed.

Chronic pain affects 1 in 5 Australians.

80% of these people are not getting treatments that could improve their quality of life.

If you are experiencing chronic pain that has lasted for over 3 months and is interfering with your daily life and ability to enjoy yourself, we recommend you seek pain specialist support.

  • Back
