Dr Shakyalal (Shavi) Fernando

MBBS (Hons) BMedSc (Hons) FRANZCOG

Shavi's goal is to help you achieve the delivery you desire while maintaining safety for you and your baby.

Waverley Private Hospital would like to introduce Dr Shakyalal (Shavi) Fernando, obstetrician, and gynaecologist.

Shavi welcomes all referrals from GPs and specialists for general and high-risk obstetrics and general gynaecology including operative gynaecology and cervical dysplasia.

Shavi is a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist who is passionate and skilled in the management of general and high-risk pregnancy, including but not limited to the management of pregnancies after fertility treatment, twins, vaginal births after caesarean, gestational diabetes, and high blood pressure in pregnancy. His philosophy is of facilitating your birth experience, with minimal intervention, while maintaining the utmost safety for you and your baby. As a father himself, he recognises the often forgotten but essential role that fathers have to play during pregnancy, labour and after delivery in supporting you and your decisions. He prides himself in his up-to-date knowledge and his ability to explain complex medical conditions in easy-to-understand terms.

In addition, Shavi is a skilled surgeon in gynaecology, approaching procedures using a ‘keyhole’ approach wherever possible. He is also certified in advanced colposcopy and the management of abnormal pap smears.

After completing his undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery with honours at Monash University, Shavi also completed a Bachelor of Medical Science with first class honours and is currently completing a PhD in gynaecology at Monash University with the Hudson Institute of Medical Research.

In addition to this, he is an Adjunct Lecturer at Monash University, where he is heavily involved in the training of future doctors. He is one of only a few doctors to concurrently hold specialist positions in both the Obstetrics and the Gynaecology departments at Monash Health at Monash Medical Centre in Clayton. Because of this, he has admitting rights to Monash Health for his public patients who require hospital care.

He balances this well with a young family and enjoys chasing around his boisterous daughter when he has a spare moment.
